Hello,
It is Yannick Lyons from The Teaching Twin Newsletter.
When instructors start experimenting with AI avatars, it is easy to focus on making the technology impressive.
More expressive movement. More elaborate backgrounds. More visual effects. A more polished voice.
But for instructional video, impressive is not necessarily the goal.
The avatar needs to deliver your explanation clearly without competing for attention.
The Avatar Is Not the Lesson
The instructional value still comes from you.
You decide what to explain, how to structure the explanation, and what students need to understand. The AI avatar simply provides another way to deliver that material.
That means the technology should support the explanation, not become the focus of it.
If students finish a video thinking more about the avatar than what it explained, the technology may be doing too much.
Familiarity Can Be More Useful Than Novelty
Students may naturally pay attention to an AI avatar the first few times they see it. The format is still unfamiliar to many people.
That is fine.
The problem is when every video gives them another reason to focus on the technology.
Changing backgrounds, exaggerated gestures, unusual voices, or a different appearance from one video to the next can keep pulling attention back to the avatar.
Consistency does the opposite.
When your avatar has a familiar appearance, voice, setting, and presentation style, students know what to expect. Over time, the format can become less noticeable.
The technology moves into the background, and your explanation moves forward.
That is a good outcome.
Review the Video Like an Instructor
I put together a simple AI Avatar Video Review Checklist you can use before publishing your next video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vDWjQP6JTe44rwfJDOjrP9RvqwgaozXz/view?usp=sharing
It is designed to give you a quick final review before making an AI avatar video available to students.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Yannick
